There is a diagnosis of our society that the great Radoje Domanović set more than a century ago in his story “Dead Sea.” It is the image of a place where every wave is unwelcome, where every new idea is dangerous, and where peace is measured by the depth of stagnation. In that sea, the greatest sin you can commit is to set sail.
But if you want to understand the mechanism of that “deadness” in the modern business world, you do not need to look only at literature. It is enough to look into an ordinary fisherman’s bucket full of crabs.
Fishermen know one strange thing: a bucket full of crabs does not need a lid. Even though each crab could individually climb up the wall of the bucket and reach freedom, none of them will succeed.
The moment one brave crab rises above the others and grabs the edge of the bucket with its claws, the others do not encourage it. On the contrary. They grab its legs and shell and pull it back down with all their strength. The result? No crab escapes, and in the end all of them end up in the pot.
This phenomenon is known in psychology as the “crab mentality,” and in our context it perfectly merges with Domanović’s “Dead Sea.”
In today’s business world, this happens every day. These are the moments when you try to introduce innovation and your colleagues respond with: “Why are you acting smart? We are fine like this.”
You want to progress or change companies, and your environment convinces you: “Stay quiet, at least you have a secure salary, it is the same everywhere.”
You show integrity and refuse to take part in intrigue, and then you become the target of gossip because your honesty exposes their insincerity.
Those are the claws pulling you down. It is the environment’s attempt to keep you in mediocrity, not because they care about you, but because your success reminds them of their own cowardice.
